Known for its bespoke metalwork, James Aiken Engineering was approached by North East Rider Volunteers Scotland (NERVS) to provide some unique pieces for its fleet of motorcycles and cars.
NERVS was set up in 2018 by Neil Powers, who had experienced the incredible work done by NHS staff in Aberdeen when both he and his wife experienced serious illnesses. Motorbike enthusiast Neil heard about the UK-based Blood Bikes and decided to set up a group covering the Grampian region as a way of saying thank you to the NHS in the area.
NERVS provides a free transportation service to the NHS, transporting medication, medical equipment, X-rays, scans, samples and human donor milk. It operates a free courier service seven days a week, providing important support when healthcare providers’ own transport service cannot operate.
NERVS has a growing fleet of cars and motorcycles used by over 200 volunteers, transporting a variety of specialist items. James Aiken Engineering was approached to design and manufacture bespoke pieces to ensure medical items are securely fastened to the bikes.
The metal parts to be designed were required to enable the motorcyclist to safely collect items, get on the road and deliver as quickly as possible. As the items being transported being personal and confidential, it was essential the metalwork had to be secure, reliable and easy to use.
James Aiken Engineering worked with NERVS to create tray for the rear of a bike, a centre stand plate, and a satellite navigation kit bracket for the fleet car.
Each item was individually designed and then fabricated, cut and welded at James Aiken Engineering Solutions in Bridge of Don, Aberdeen, using stainless steel to for added strength. The items were
NERVS undertook over 500 trips transporting vital medical equipment, supplies and information across Grampian during 2018/19. The metal parts have performed perfectly, with NERVS drivers confident their equipment will continue to serve their important work for many years to come.
